I knew I wasn’t going to be able to grow my blog without social media so, 3 months after starting MemeandHarri, I took the plunge (kicking and screaming) and joined Instagram. I was planning to wait until the new year as it seemed kind of fitting but, let’s face it, December is the most exciting month so I decided to start early in mid December and was instantly hooked.
Here I am a year later and it is a lot tougher than I imagined. A few things I’ve learnt:
- It is a lot harder to take a good picture than I thought. My husband has always been into his photography – I would show him a picture and say how lovely is this and often he would reply with “it’s terrible quality” or “it’s too dark” and I would never understand – now I do. It can be really hard to get a good picture and I marvel at those Instagram accounts who make photography look so easy.
- It takes time to get a good picture. I would look at certain feeds and see a simple picture that previously seemed like it was taken and posted in seconds. I now know (from experience) that it takes a lot of shots to get one good one. I must take about 100 pictures every weekend but only use about 10 of them – it is exhausting and to those people whose Instagram feeds are flawless, hats off to them.
- People will follow, then unfollow then follow, then unfollow. It can drive you insane. Now I can generally tell who will unfollow me straight away but there are always the odd few people who you have a good online chatter and will then unfollow you – it is baffling! It is all so fickle!
- Like most things you will fall in and out of love with it. Some days you will feel the pressure to upload at least two pictures a day and then you will just get fed up and not post for days. I guess, like most social media platforms, the more you put into it the more you get out.
All that said, Instagram is very much my favourite social media platform. I love looking at people’s pictures and I also love looking through my own feed seeing our adventures and marvelling how much my girls have grown. I am also trying to be more confident and putting up the odd picture of myself. I have said this before but I am so envious of people who can just put themselves up there with confidence. I made a promise to myself that I would take a few more pictures to document my pregnancy this time around (I have hardly any from my previous pregnancies) and I think Instagram and my blog have encouraged me to do that.
So to all those people who follow me, like my pictures and take the time to comment, thank you – it means a lot. Here’s to another year and as our family expands I am looking forward to capturing all those extra special moments.

I love Instagram, it’s definitely my favourite social media platform as well! I’ve just checked your feed out and there are some lovely photos there, I look forward to seeing more! #sharingthebloglove
This is good to know, as I am planning to set my Instagram next year. Still, so many SM platforms and each of them has so many things you have to learn in order to make them work for you! Otherwise there’s no point of having them, right? so, step by step I guess!;)) #ablogginggoodtime
Oh I love your photos! Instagram is probably my favourite platform too. And I agree with you about the people that follow and unfollow. If you’ve had no interaction with them it’s not an issue, they’re just playing a game. But if you interact with them and they then unfollow (always ‘big’ bloggers) that’s just rude.

I have experienced a lot of follow/unfollow but none that engage and then go away. That is very fickle!

I love instagram too, though like you was quite reluctant to join at first. Have just followed you, you have a beautiful feed. I’ll enjoy seeing your picture. #Sharingthebloglove
I LOVE Instagram! I joined a few years ago before I started blogging abd followed celebs and a few friends. Since blogging though I have enjoyed it even more as I have made many friends through it. I can’t stand the whole follow/unfollow thing it drives me mad too. Have a lovely Christmas. Sarah #ablogginggoodtime
Instagram is my happy place and I could (and do) spend hours looking through pretty pictures. I always love the way you capture your girls and enjoy seeing your photos. Yes, people play the follow/unfollow game which drives me mad. How do they have time?!?!? x
I’m just popping back to say Thank you for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove x
I love Instagram and I am a big fan of your Instagram feed. I can’t be bothered with the follow/unfollow game. What’s the point. I just follow who I want to follow. Hope that you have a lovely Christmas #TheList
You know how much I love Instagram and how much I love your feed too! It’s funny how you learn over time what makes a good photo, isn’t it? I cringe looking back at some of my early Instagram shots, but I love the memories they hold so I won’t delete them, even though I can see that they’re pretty terrible photos! I’m another one who takes hundreds of pictures just to end up posting about 10 of them – I think that’s key for taking good photos to be honest, especially with children, an awful lot of it is about luck! Thanks so much for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove
I love your IG photos. They are so great! I am also on the same learning curve. There is so much pressure to put on a picture perfect isn’t it. It nice photos is what we enjoy – and I also will try to be a little bit more perfect – but I doubt it. lol! Have a lovely Christmas! 🙂 xx #TheList
I really struggle with photography too and am planning to take a course this year to learn how to do it properly! #thelistlinky
Oh I know exactly what you mean – I love instagram but I also hate it a bit too! I just went past 3K and being around a whole number made me realise how the figure fluctuates so much! It was up and down like a yo yo that week – so many unfollows with every new follow. I salute those that make it to the double figure Ks!
